Quitting smoking is an important but often challenging process. For many smokers, giving up conventional cigarettes may require several attempts and different approaches.
New evidence from a major Cochrane review adds another interesting perspective to the discussion surrounding alternative options for smoking cessation.
Led by Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the review evaluated 80 randomised controlled trials involving a total of 29,861 participants.
According to the findings, approximately 8 to 10 out of every 100 smokers who used nicotine-containing e-cigarettes successfully abstained from smoking for at least six months.
The corresponding rate was approximately 6% among those who used nicotine-free e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches, gum, lozenges and sprays. Among those who received no support or only behavioural therapy, the rate was approximately 5%.
These findings indicate that nicotine-containing e-cigarettes may be an option that helps some adult smokers in their efforts to quit conventional cigarettes.
One noteworthy aspect of the review is its consideration of e-cigarettes as a potential intermediate step towards quitting completely.
For an adult smoker who has struggled to quit conventional cigarettes using other methods, switching to a regulated e-cigarette may offer an alternative approach.
The key difference lies in the fact that conventional cigarettes rely on the combustion of tobacco. E-cigarettes work differently: they heat a liquid to produce an aerosol.
According to the findings presented in the review, regulated nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are considered significantly less harmful than conventional smoking, although this does not mean they are risk-free.
For this reason, choosing regulated and legally compliant products is particularly important.
Consumers should know what they are using, choose products that meet the applicable requirements and stay informed about their ingredients.
Quitting smoking is not the same for everyone. Each smoker has different needs, a different history and a different level of dependence.
The new Cochrane evidence does not suggest that there is a single solution. It does, however, show that the discussion surrounding smoking cessation and alternative options continues to evolve.
